Shoot! GCA Beaver team!

I love basketball, I love watching NBA and talking about it with others, I love the speed that basketball player runs and shoots, I love the power when they slam dunk, I can lose myself when I watch a basketball match. These reasons made me have no doubt to join the Basketball Club in GCA. To be honest, I did not doubt my ability at all at that time. However, this kind of confidence disappeared gradually in my following experience.
First the basketball club coach---Mr. Saxby let us do was to run around the track for 11 times. Although it was quite surprised to me, I still insisted to run the completed numbers every time from October to November. I thought I was quite excellent that in the matches I must be the most potential player! Soon in November, the competition was coming. Our GCA girls’ basketball team---Beaver, had two rivals, one was team from Jiaxin GCA, the other one was from Hangzhou International School. That was our first formal competition, so I felt a little nervous and much cold sweat appeared in my palms. As a new member in basketball team, I sat on the chairs with other Grade 10 players, including my best friend---Zoe. Through I watched the match with HIS, I gradually realized that this rival was not as simple as I imagined, and it was really not. Until Mr. Saxby asked Grade 10s to play, my confidence before disappeared at all. As I expected, HIS was really competitive, Grade 10s did not how to grab the basketball, dribble, or shoot at all. The score of HIS increased rapidly, but our score was still the same. There was an opportunity existed suddenly, the ball was in Zoe’s hand and every HIS players were behind her! I ran forward quickly and caught up Zoe on her right. A HIS player tried to stop her, then she passed the ball to me accurately, I tried to do a three-step lay-up, however we did not train this before, so I did not get that. The following match until we changed the players, we nearly did not dare to see Mr. Saxby or other players’ eyes, felt afraid that they would blame us. I suddenly regretted that I should not be so confident then became proud. Then in the following competitions I took part in, I did not dare to be proud any more, just learned and listened to Mr. Saxby.
In general, our team won the team from Jiaxin GCA but lost in the match with HIS for two times. Although we did not get the best achievement, I got the valuable information about myself that I cannot be so proud and overconfident any more, or would get the most disappointed results. However, I was determined and good at admitting the disadvantages. Then I should keep these advantages I have, without the proud, I believe I can conquer almost all the difficulties in the future.
Basketball is a kind of sports that really has many amounts of exercise, it helps players to develop the fast movement and judgment, also build the muscles. However, it is suitable to teenagers and young people, but it will be harmful to the old.
Now I am careful and serious to all the training, only want to prove myself in the next competition. I steadily believe that we will win through the difficulties and faults we have met, so do not give up, GCA Beaver team! Just do it!

What I learned from being a leader

Leadership is a club which emphasizes in developing the leaders. I have taken part in it since I spent the first year in GCA. Actually I was extremely shy and introvert before I studied in GCA, so I feel a little nervous when I attended the leadership family first. Mr. Gallinelli is the instructor of this club, and in the first meeting he gave us an impressive class, he used a-hundred cash to teach us that if you want to do anything just start planning now and take actions. The two-hour activity made the group members cooperate well and use brain when we are playing. The 6-person pyramid let us trust each other; transporting ping-pong ball made us patient; guessing-words exercises our oral explanation. I began to have a new recognition to the leadership that sometimes the games can have a wonderful communication between group members and make our relationship closer. I was looking forward the next activity.
On March 21, 2009, Sheraton Business Case Study began. Through the effort and preparation, we all wore in suits and arrived at Kinsley Sheraton Hotel on time that Saturday morning. That was the first time that I felt the formal atmosphere in the business conference. Mr. Gallinelli seemed that he also felt the seriousness. As a result, we began a new game called bridge. Several people formed a circle and sat on the chairs, then they lie on the person’s lap who behind them and put the chairs away. They had to insist without the hands or any parts of the body touch the ground. I did that game with my group members---Kate, Tracy, Kathleen and the Leadership CEO Cherry. The success depends on the belief to each other and determination, we competed with another boys’ group and of course we did not want to lose. I conquered the sour feeling from my legs and fell down on each other happily after we won.
Soon after this unforgettable memory, the GCA sports day started on 24th of April, 2009. As a member of Leadership, I became the class leader of 10-B and my mission was to lead them to the appointed places on time. From beginning I received this mission, I felt it was not an easy thing, because I had to lead a twenty-eight-person class alone and picked appointed amounts of people to participate the games. Then I prepared, read all the rules of the games, let my classmates to book their names under the sports they want to take part in. I remembered that the mid-term exams also held during those weekdays, so I always did this stuff until the midnight. Until that day came, although I prepared a lot, the facts always forced me to change some classmates’ names and balance. The toughest thing I met was that there were two games happen at the same time, and until the next game’s time, they had not finished! I knew that if we did not go to the next game on time, we would lose the whole points! Luckily, Ms. Bartell promised she would explain the situation to the leading teacher who instructed the sport we did not do, so we thanked to her and ran to the next game immediately. Then everything happened in order in the following time, and we finished that sport in the end. After I got home, I felt extremely exhausted learned that actually being a leader was such a tough thing. However, my successful feeling after this Sports day was much more than the tiredness.
Being a leader, means to be patient, easy-going, responsible, cooperated, those are the ways to work effectively and safely with other students at GCA. Leadership's strength is obvious, it has the leaders of all GCA. However, the leaders in this club may be not know each other very well instead of a small group which contains the people they are familiar with.

Working in companies

During the winter holiday and the May holiday, I used the time to work for two companies which let me learn a lot through the job and let me know the real working environment in the future.
My work was to be the secretary in the manager’s office. Actually the work was a little different from the formal secretaries; I did not have the formal training. However I tried my best to do everything, answering the phone calls, made the files in order, etc.
I think I am organized enough to divide the files, but the fact nearly made me mad. The files, envelops, newspapers, information were everywhere on the office desk and mixed together. The several folders and binders stayed in the big bookcases with dust, and the inside files were mixed as well. I really felt dizzy when I saw the untidy scenes, but my mission was clear enough. As a result I began to plan where to start first and how. I decided to divide the files on the desk first. I used the dividing ways given by the manager to divide. The necessary skills were quick judgment, clear thought, and fast movement. I divided more quickly as time passed, and my hands were full of dust, too. When I finished the files on the desk with exhausted body, I discovered a problem that the binders and folders in the bookcases had mixed files as well, so I should divide the binders and folders first or I can not put the divided files in them. It was a files’ traffic jam, eventually I successfully finish everything. However, the whole work was not finished in one day, so I was enlightened that everything should be done with a little but careful steps everyday.
Because I worked in the company, I gave an advice from my work that the binders and folders were nearly used out for files were too many. They accepted it willingly.
I found another challenge for me during the work. I used to sleep late in the morning and hated to get up early. However during my working days, I had to get up early in the morning. It was a bitter process that I conquered to insist, to be more specific, it was a process to struggle with myself.
The company who I worked for a mild and cooperated group, everyone had his or her own work and they finished very well that assured others also can finish work perfectly. However the real responsible worker in files room did not work well, I heard that he was lazy and did not make the files in order at all.
With the first experience, the second volunteer work I did was much more efficient, although the work was the same.
I think the work has something good to affect me, such as it can develop my organization. Because whatever I will learn in the university, without the organization and patience I cannot have an excellent mark although I have the talent. The second benefit was the cooperated spirit, human cannot live alone in this world and the work especially needs it, so if I can do my work well and cooperate with others at the same time that will be my unique ability.
